What? Warner Bros. wants Ben Affleck to direct the Justice League movie

Savor these words: Justice League, directed by Ben Affleck.

I like Ben Affleck’s directorial efforts. Gone Baby Gone was a good start, The Town was awesome and Argo looks like a really interesting film. But Variety is reporting that Warner Bros. has Ben Affleck as the number 1 choice for the Justice League movie.

Of course, Christopher Nolan is the real number one choice but he doesn’t want to do it. So now we have Affleck, who has been sent a version of the script for the film by Will Beall. Variety says he’ll meet with the studio in the coming days about the project. He has quite a few projects in the pipeworks, like an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand so taking on the Justice League would wipe that all away.

There’s also the sticking point that Affleck only directs movies he’s in, and although Affleck has improved as an actor I don’t see a role he could take in a Justice League movie that wouldn’t turn out horribly.

Also, where Marvel and Disney choose directors that suit the film and character best Warner Bros. looks like they’re just going with whatever has worked for them in the past. The only explanation here is that the Brothers Warner wants a dark and gritty Justice League. It’s not a done deal yet, so we shall see what happens. [Variety via Filmonic]
