There has been a mystery surrounding Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film, The Master. Of course, the There Will Be Blood helmer hasn’t made a movie since that film, which released in 2007.

In the mean time, it looks like he’s been researching. The Master stars frequent collaborator/best buddy Phillip Seymour Hoffman as the leader of a religion some people have claimed is based on Scientology. Joaquin Phoenix plays a drunk-ass Navy man who has lost his way and finds his way into Hoffman’s group.

The first teaser debuted at Cannes and it’s not totally a trailer – it’s pretty much a two minute clip from the beginning of the film, but it looks pretty good. The classic bombastic PTA music is there. The film is due out later this year for Oscar season and will probably nab Phoenix and Hoffman Oscar nominations, as well as one for composer Johnny Greenwood, who you may recognize from Radiohead. It also stars Amy Adams, Laura Dern and Jesse Plemons. [via The Playlist]
