Warner Bros. wants to make another I Am Legend, also starring Will Smith
I Am Legend was a huge success for Warner Bros. It garnered more than $584 million worldwide. But it doesn’t strike you as a film that would inspire a sequel, does it?
That’s mostly because – SPOILERS: Will Smith dies at the end – END SPOILERS. The intention is for the film to NOT be a prequel and for Smith to reprise his role as scientist Robert Neville, according to Deadline. Smith won’t sign on until he reads a prepared script first and the original film’s director is no where to be seen. Not even Deadline has heard what his thoughts are.
There’s one thing that stands out about this one. Why? How? Why in the world do you need a sequel, other than money? How will you bring back Smith’s character without resorting to prequel status?
This year we’ve seen what happens when you prequel a movie that has an devastating end in The Thing. It doesn’t turn out well and even could end up the same exact film. My guess is that the film turns into a pseudo prequel, with another story about Smith in an alone world. Although, if they don’t want to undermine the original he can’t encounter any people. So, basically it would be extremely boring.
Another possibility is that Neville is turned into a zombie thing and becomes a smart zombie. So he leads a gang against an evil gang of killer zombies (redundancy!). This is Warner Bros though, and they are also working on a prequel of 300. So who knows. I now treat you to one of the best scenes in the movie. No word on whether Fred will return as well.
