Vin Diesel has been stringing people along on his secret Marvel role for a while know. Was he going to be playing Thanos? Ultron? Vision? Rocket Raccoon? Nope. He’s playing Groot, a giant tree man that’s going to be debuting in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy. But why?
He spoke to LA Times’ Hero Complex and gave them a reason:
I’m an actor. I can do whatever the … I want. As an actor, not everything has to be the most obvious choice. And sometimes, the best thing you can do — as far as Steven Spielberg and his advice — is to defy expectations. So if everybody thinks you’re going to go for this one thing and you flip it entirely and go for the strangest Marvel character, it’s interesting. And when something is interesting, it’s inspiring.
The movie is already halfway through production though. So when is he going to have time to film this this Fast and Furious 7 ramping up? Marvel magic, apparently.
That’s the thing — I’m so busy. The audience wanted Vin and Marvel, Vin and Marvel. But I’m too busy to do a six-month role. So what Marvel came up with was really interesting. … I am watching a social wave influence and in some ways guide their thinking.
I’m assuming he means that the solution was voice work. I’m betting he’s just going to do the voice of Groot, who will remain a CG character. It’s a shame that the rest of the cast won’t have Diesel on set to be able to react to him in some kind of motion capture suit, but that’s not so bad.
Guardians of the Galaxy is still the Marvel project I’m most excited for. It’s not really a superhero film as it’s more of a space comedy/opera, but that’s wonderfully refreshing! It’s got a great cast and a talented director behind it as well. And it has Rocket Racoon too, who I’ve pegged to be the breakout character of 2014. I’m very high on this film, and Diesel playing a tree makes it that much better. [LA Times]
