Tyler Perry doesn’t usually star in movies that he doesn’t direct. He made an exception for Star Trek (yeah, he’s in it) and he also made an exception for this Alex Cross movie.

You’ll remember Alex Cross movies like Along Came a Spider and and Kiss the Girls. They’re films based on books by master author James Patterson. And they were made famous by Morgan Freeman. The problem with Tyler Perry stepping into the shoes of Freeman? He isn’t as good. Not as good by a mile. By seven miles.

Watching this trailer, which is about Cross going after some ex-military crazy MMA fighter who also wants to kill his wife, you get the sense that Perry is going to leave a lot of space in those shoes. He’s far too wooden and definitely not interesting enough. Movies have to have a lead character you care about, from the trailer it seems like this won’t be the case. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe once we’re in the film it’ll be different. But right now this isn’t looking good.
