Trailer: John Hawkes is charming in The Sessions, about a man confined to an iron lung that wants to get laid

Here’s your first look at an Academy Award-nominated performance. John Hawkes plays a man who has been crippled by polio, but wants to lose his virginity at 38. So he hires a sex therapist to help him out while getting some guidance from his priest.

The trailer looks absolutely charming and Hawkes seems great in it. Hawkes actually rolled his spine to prepare for this role so he’s likely to get some award consideration (and probably a few wins). This is also based on the true story of journalist and poet Mark O’Brien.

If you’re into uplifting award-fodder with a different premise then you should keep your eye on this one. It’s kind of like The 40 Year Old Virgin but more serious and based on real life.
