Tom Cruise will star in Universal’s Van Helsing reboot
Remember when Hugh Jackman was huge and he starred in that Van Helsing movie with Kate Beckinsale? It was pretty terrible, so Universal doesn’t want you to remember it.
That’s why they’re rebooting it with Tom Cruise in the lead role. And hey, he’s also going to produce. It’s going to be written by Star Trek scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.
The last time Kurtzman and Orci teamed up for Universal they churned out the mega flop that was Cowboys and Aliens. But they’ve also delivered hits like two of the Transformers films, Star Trek and they’re going to write The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
This is part of Universal’s rebooting effort. They’re re-doing Wolfman as a B-Movie (think Evil Dead), are bringing back The Mummy and now want to retool Van Helsing. When you have as many classic horror properties as Universal you need to leverage them as best you can. And in case you forgot, Tom Cruise can still sell a movie. Not as well as before, but he’s still got the chops. [Deadline via The Playlist]
