In 2012 we didn’t get a Martin Scorsese film. It’s a shame because his 2011 offering, Hugo, is pretty damn fantastic and probably the best use of 3D in history. But now after 2 years he’s returning with a spectacular story and an even better cast.
The Wolf of Wall Street stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey and Jonah Hill in a movie based on the book by Jordan Belfort about a New York stockbrocker who refuses to cooperate in a large securities fraud case involving corruption on Wall Street, the corporate banking world and the mob.
That’s not all though. This cast also includes Jon Bernthal, Jon Favreau, Kyle Chandler, Spike Jonze, Rob Reiner and Jean Dujardin. It’s really a fantastic cast and it looks like this movie is going to highlight them in the best way.
The main trio looks fantastic and I could easily see Oscar nominations for all three of them. Hill looks to be in good form post Moneyball. McConaughey looks like he’s going to take sleazy stockbrocker to a whole new level and then there’s DiCaprio. Oscar success has avoided him so far. This trailer makes him look like he’s in his element here. Could this finally be the film for him? I wish I knew, but it’s going to be asked of him every time he takes a good role.
Most of all though it’s nice to have Scorsese back. And it looks like we’re going to see a more charming, comedic Scorsese this time around. That’s fine by me because the man is a master, but it’s nice to see this lighter sides of him after the majority of his great movies are dark, gritty and violent.
The Wolf of Wall Street will arrive on November 15.
