The new Bond film finally has a title and plot

Bond 23 is set to start shooting today. The team behind the movie thought this was a good time for them to call a press conference and discuss the film a little. You know, basics like title, plot and characters.

First up, the film is called Skyfall. The title isn’t tied to any of Ian Fleming’s novels or stories. It’s a standalone story that won’t wrap up any lose ends that the horrible named Quantum of Solace had.

The film is about Bond’s loyalty to M. His loyalty is tested as M’s past comes back to haunt her. MI6 comes under attack and Bond must track down and destroy the threat no matter the personal cost.

Director Sam Mendes is looking to tell a deeper, more nuanced story, but not at the expense of the action. He said that the action and drama need to co-exist in the film.

As for the cast, Daniel Craig is obviously back as Bond. Naomie Harris (pictured right), was long rumored to be the new Moneypenny, but today she was announced as a field agent named Eve. Either they’re out to mess with us or the original reports were totally wrong.

As for the other Bond girl, Berenice Marlohe (pictured left), she will be playing a “glamorous, enigmatic character named Severin.” What kind of name is Severin? Is she Severus Snape’s sister?

Anyway, speaking of Harry Potter, Ralph Fiennes role was not revealed. They were very coy on whether he was playing a good or bad guy. Apparently his role would spoil some of the movie. Sigh.

No worries on Javier Bardem. He’s playing the villain, although he doesn’t see it that way. “Who told you a villain is a bad person? For me, it’s an honour to be at this table for many reasons. It will be fun to do,” Bardem says. If that means this villain will have some real motivation I’m going to be very, very happy. [IndieWire via Movies.com]
