Review: The Muppets’ new movie is musically marvelous
As a huge fan of Jim Henson, I couldn’t wait to see what Kermit the Frog and his gang would be up to in their newest movie, The Muppets. I spent most of my childhood watching VHS tapes of The Great Muppet Caper, The Muppet Movie, A Muppet Christmas Carol and whatever reruns of The Muppet Show we could record. This would be the first time I had the chance to watch those crazy Muppets on the big screen and I didn’t want to miss my chance.
As expected, The Muppets didn’t disappoint. Gary (Jason Segal), Mary (Amy Adams), and Walter (the newest Muppet character), head out to Los Angeles to fulfill Walter’s dream of taking the tour of the Muppet Studios. Soon after arriving, Walter uncovers a plot that would ruin his vacation and destroy the Muppet Theater and all that goes with it. Determined to save the old Muppet Show Theater from a rich oil tycoon, Walter persuades Kermit to round up the rest of his crew and find a way to collect the money to buy the theater back.
Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, Gonzo and the rest of the Muppets team up with Gary, Mary and Walter, bringing back all the silly shenanigans as they prepare to put on a telethon to raise the $10 million needed to save their beloved theater. Kermit throws on his tuxedo and hosts one last version of The Muppet Show, with help from a very angry Jack Black and the rest of the gang.
Despite the fact the entire theater was filled with moms and dads and small children, I spent the whole movie singing along with all the classic songs and laughed during the new ones. I felt like I was a kid again, watching all my favorite Muppets with the same timeless humor and maniacal laughs as before.
With cameo appearances by Jim Parsons, Selena Gomez, Whoppi Goldberg, Zach Gilifinakis, Neil Patrick Harris and Mickey Rooney, the Muppets is sure to create new fans and rekindle a passion for those who have fond memories of Kermit and his pals. Without a doubt, this new Muppet adventure will keep you laughing and singing along from beginning to end, Mahna Mahna!
