The Muppets 2 will happen, but possibly without Jason Segel

The Muppets may have been one of the best movies of 2011. It was pure happy. If you didn’t walk out of the theater with a smile on your face then I’m sorry but I’m not your friend.

Deals have been reached with director James Bobin and co-writer Nicholas Stoller to return for the sequel, but Jason Segel has not signed on yet to co-write with Stoller again. Now now, it’s not what you’re thinking. Segel didn’t get a huge ego and ask for 70-bazillion dollars. He pretty much doesn’t have any time.

His commitments are to How I Met Your Mother and other films, so he may not have time to be involved in the pre-production (read: scriptwriting) this time around. He still should be able to star in the film, hopefully, which is great news by itself. It’s sad he won’t be writing though, because he has a lot of passion for the subject matter. He and Stoller pitched the movie to Disney in 2008, just before he broke it big in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which involved muppet-like puppets.

All Disney now has to do is re-sign Bret McKenzie to write some songs. If not, well, shame on you Disney for letting all this talent go to waste. [Vulture]
