Here’s a wonderful summer surprise: The Kings of Summer. It’s a small comedy about three teens who decide to make the most of their summer by building themselves a house in the woods where they can rule like kings rather than be paupers at home.
The film is led by three relative unknowns in Nick Robinson, Moises Arias and Gabriel Basso, but it’s supported by a host of awesome comedic actors like Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Allison Brie, Kumail Nanjiani and more. And it looks like an absolute blast.
Sometimes you need that counterprogramming to serve as a sort of palette cleanser to prep you for more mayhem, destruction and explosions after watching a bunch of mayhem, destruction and explosions. The Great Gatsby is a good example of that after movies like Iron Man 3, Pain and Gain and Oblivion hit the theaters. In the coming weeks we have The Hangover 3, Man of Steel and Fast and Furious 6, with Pacific Rim arriving weeks after that along with White House Down. That’s a helluva lot of explosions.
So when this one arrives on May 31 it’s going to be like diving into a beautiful, cooling lake. I can’t wait.
