The Exorcist is being adapted for TV by the director of Martha Marcy May Marlene

Movies are turning into TV shows, TV shows are trying to be more like movies. The world of entertainment is going crazy. Hell, Hannibal is being adapted into a TV series. And now it looks like another horror classic is being adapted – The Exorcist.

OK, The Exorcist is more than a classic film. It solidified the horror genre and even gave it a couple Academy Awards. Now, Martha Marcy May Marlene director Sean Durkin wants to re-adapt the book it was based on for the small screen.

Durkin is going to take the book, written by William Peter Blatty, and adapt it into a 10-episode TV series. And the TV show will be more of a companion to the film that a re-imagining. Instead of following the events that lead up to the demonic possession, the show takes place after and follows the family and how they cope with what went on.

Sounds good right? Yeah, and what’s even better is that Durkin is a perfect fit for this material. If you haven’t seen Martha Marcy May Marlene, you should. It’s pretty disturbing and it’s about a family dealing with a girl who has run away from a cult. It’s strong stuff, stuff that could rival an Exorcist TV show.

It doesn’t have a network though. Vulture says they’ll begin shopping it around in two weeks. I’m hoping AMC gives it a go. [Vulture via /Film]
