The Captain America-Peggy Carter reunion was cut from The Avengers
Be warned, the following post contains SPOILERS for Captain America: The First Avenger.
At the end of Captain America, there was a genuinely touching moment where Cap’n promises his love interest Peggy Carter a date. Unfortunately, they don’t get to have that date because the Captain crashes his plane into the ice and is frozen until modern day, with no Peggy Carter in sight.
In The Avengers, Captain and Carter were meant to reunite. Unfortunately the scene was cut. Director Joss Whedon explains in an interview with The New York Times:
One of the best scenes that I wrote was the beautiful and poignant scene between Steve and Peggy [Carter] that takes place in the present. And I was the one who was like, Guys, we need to lose this. It was killing the rhythm of the thing. And we did have a lot of Cap, because he really was the ‘in’ for me. I really do feel a sense of loss about what’s happening in our culture, loss of the idea of community, loss of health care and welfare and all sorts of things. I was spending a lot of time having him say it, and then I cut that.
So Peggy and Captain won’t get that dance after all, it’s sad. Sometimes as a director you have to make the tough choice to make a better film. Hopefully he’ll get that chance to have his dance with Peggy in Captain America 2. [New York Times via /Film]
