The Hollywood Reporter is reporting tonight that Moon and Source Code director Duncan Jones has signed on to direct Warcraft, based on Blizzard’s bestselling video game franchise, for Legendary Pictures.
The script is being written by Blood Diamond scribe Charles Leavitt and the film will be co-produced by Blizzard. So far, Jones has dealt with cerebral science fiction like Moon and Source Code. He’s also had small budgets. Moon was made with $1 million while Source Code jumped to $35 million. Warcraft is expected to have a budget of over $100 million.
Jones is a huge gamer and constantly takes to his twitter to not only talk film, but the games he’s playing.
So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game.Ive always said its possible.Got to DO it now!

Jones is the absolute perfect choice for a movie like Warcraft. He knows how to make intelligent cinema, he knows the source material and is a passionate gamer. If there’s anyone who could do Warcraft justice it’s Duncan Jones.
The oddity is that Jones is more known for science fiction rather than fantasy. Warcraft is hosted in a fantasy setting with orcs, elves and humans battling in never ending wars. The Warcraft franchise is now most known for hugely popular massively multiplayer online game World of Warcraft.
If you didn’t have enough tentpoles to worry about, here’s yet another one to keep your eye on. For reference, I’ve included some Warcraft CG videos from the games. So yeah, when you take one of the best young filmmakers in Hollywood and give him a rich world that he understands only good things can happen. [THR]
