Review Roundup: Madagascar 3

I know, I know. Prometheus is the big dog this week. It’s all everyone is talking about. But if you have a family and some kids and you want something a little more friendly your options are pretty much Madagascar 3 or … well, Winnie the Pooh on DVD for the millionth time. We’ll have our Prometheus review later today/tonight so this week’s roundup just has Madagascar 3.

Madagascar 3

Lisa Kennedy of the Denver Post says:

From time to time the improbable occurs: A sequel outdoes its original. It doesn’t happen so often that critics are forced to eat crow about their distrust of Hollywood’s repeat offenders.

Amy Biancolli of the San Francisco Chronicle says:

The screenplay, by Eric Darnell and Noah Baumbach, churns out the snappy witticisms with admirable creative gusto, but it whizzes along at such a frenetic pace that you’ll probably miss half of them.

Stephen Whitty of the New Jersey Star-Ledger says:

Julien and the penguins have kept these films going far longer than the first episode suggested was possible, and while this outing is still fine, there’s no use beating a dead horse. Or even a cartoon zebra.

Michael O’Sullivan of the Washington Post says:

The third outing in the popular series of animated adventures about Alex the lion (voice of Ben Stiller), Marty the zebra (Chris Rock), Melman the giraffe (David Schwimmer) and Gloria the hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith) may be the best of the bunch, simply because it busts the leash that tethers it to anything resembling reality.
