Real-life Castaway getting evicted from his magical island

Remember Castaway? The Tom Hanks movie where he gets stuck on an island and has to learn to live while becoming best friends with a volleyball named Wilson? There’s a real life version of that… but crazier.

His name is David Glasheen. He’s a former Sydney businessman who lost millions in the early 90′s and got divorced, so he moved to Restoration Island (off the coast of Australia) in 1993 and has been living there ever since with solar-powered Internet, a dog and a mannequin that he dresses up like his wife.

A mannequin that he dresses up like a woman. That he wheels around. And dresses. Right.

So why is he on this island? He was going to build a giant resort there, but after that crash he kind of just moved there with his girlfriend. She thought it was hard to live on an island with no one around so she bolted. But now, the Australian government has voted to have him evicted because he hasn’t built that resort yet, and that was a stipulation of the lease he took out on the land. Now he’s just chilling with his mannequin and dog.

According to a 43-year lease, which commenced in 1996, stated that he and a business partner should develop tourist accommodation and fishing facilities valued at least $AUS200,000. The Queensland Supreme Court has ruled that the land should be repossessed.

And what’s with that mannequin? Well, Glasheen last made news when he got on a dating site to try to find some lady friends.

“It gets lonely out here,” he told a reporter at the time. “My only hope is for a mermaid to turn up on the beach.”

That’s why he opts for the creepy looking mannequin lady friend. Just by the by, he doesn’t have any plans on what he’ll do once he leaves the island. I’d highly recommend a Lost marathon. Or maybe he could check out Survivor. [Telegraph via FilmDrunk]
