Nicholas Stoller has had an interesting career as a director. He started with Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which was a significant hit and hilarious. And it also helped launched Mila Kunis into the stratosphere, but I digress.
Since then he hasn’t been able to meet that same quality. There was Get Him To The Greek, which had some good moments but was mostly meh and then there was The Five-Year Engagement, which wasn’t bad and also had some good moments, but was ultimately forgettable.
If the trailer for his next film, Neighbors, is any indication he might be returning to good form. He’s assembled a funny cast, with the likes of Seth Rogen, Dave Franco, Rose Byrne and Zac Efron. Yes, Zac Efron.
It’s nice – once again – to see that he’s branching out and trying different things. He looks perfectly at home here as a dickish frat boy who has nothing better to do than to torture his neighbors, who are new parents to boot.
And it looks like the majority of this film might be a war between the two sets of neighbors, which has certainly been done before. I don’t mind though – IF they can provide us with some fun and funny hijinks and keep things moving at a fast clip.
I’m very down for this though. It looks fun, the cast looks interesting and it’s from a director that has done some good, albeit not great, work.
Neighbors opens May 9, 2014 – which tells me they think this movie has enough chops to draw in the big crowds.
