Last year there were rumblings that former music network MTV was looking to adapt Scream into a TV show. The Hollywood Reporter is now reporting that the network gas greenlit the series and that Wes Craven himself is going to direct the pilot.
The show, if it’s a success, would join MTV’s Awkward and Teen Wolf, which was also adapted from a movie, as their scripted offerings. It would also bury any chance of anyone considering MTV a music network. That’s long gone, folks.
I mean, I guess. I could see the basic plot of Scream stretched out across seasons of the show. Murders are happening and no one knows what’s going on. It’s certainly not the first time a movie has been adapted into a TV show. As we’ve seen, NBC has Hannibal, there’s also Bates Motel and Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer was adapted into a TV show with great success.
Plus, it’s MTV. Their main competitor in scripted television is The CW, so you’ll have an idea of what to expect from this show. At least Wes Craven is directing it, so that’ll be something to look out for. [THR]
