Avatar was a huge hit. It’s the biggest movie of modern times and it pretty much reinvented 3D in film. People loved it when it first came out, but lately there’s been a backlash. It’s people realizing that 3D carried the movie and that it was basically Pocahontas in space.
And now Sigourney Weaver, who is somehow returning for more Avatars, says that the next three will shoot at the same time. I’ll be honest: I have no clue how the hell this is going to work. It’s going to take a lot of money, Cameron can’t rely on the magic of 3D any longer and people don’t really want to sit through three more Avatar films.
Cameron will have to make Avatar 2 significantly better than the first to get people reinvested in the franchise. I’m not sure he can do that. And I’m not sure people care enough to reinvest. I feel like someone needs to sit Cameron down and tell him “yo dude, Avatar wasn’t that good stop investing yourself so much into this franchise. Make Battle Angel!”
Unfortunately, Cameron has been right far more than he’s been wrong (Aliens, Terminator 1 and 2, and no matter what you say: Titanic and Avatar). [via Movies.com]
