How To Train Your Dragon is one of the better animated films in recent memory. It’s legitimately amazing, but it had the poor fortune of coming out in the same year as Toy Story 3 so not as many people seem to talk about it.
It’s going to be difficult to match up to the first one, but our first look at the film gives me hope. It seems as if it’s simply a scene lifted from the movie, but that’s OK. In fact, that’s what a teaser trailer should be. Just take something from the movie without context and tease the world that you’re going to take me into. Disney’s Frozen actually does the same thing for the most part.
This sequel takes place 5 years after the first one and explores a world where dragons are readily accepted. In fact, dragon races have become the favorite pastime for a lot of folks. Hiccup and Toothless are not those folks as they like to go explore the world. One day they find a mysterious ice cave that’s home to a bunch of wild dragons and some mysterious dude that’s known as the Dragon Rider. War is about to erupt so Hiccup and Toothless fight to keep the peace.
Seems like a natural extension of the first one. Now that everyone rides dragons you can’t really throw a bigger dragon at them, but you can throw another person that rides dragons. Though the heart of the first one really was the relationship between Hiccup and his father and Hiccup and Toothless. Hopefully those are carried further.
And I gotta say: wing suits! Usually those are the last bastion of action directors who have no clue on how to improve their product. I don’t think that’s the case here. Hiccup is a known tinkerer and makes stuff like Toothless’ rear wing, so obviously he’d eventually adapt the technology for himself. I think the wing suits are going to play into the larger plot or finale as well.
Overall, How To Train Your Dragon 2 looks marvelous. We’ll see it June 20, 2014.
