George Lucas to retire from LucasFilm to make experimental films in garage

Star Wars fans – take a deep breath. George Lucas is going to be too preoccupied to make any more changes to the franchise so many love so much. He’s said this before, but this is for real. He’s retiring from LucasFilm.

“I’m moving away from the company, I’m moving away from all my businesses, I’m finishing all my obligations and I’m going to retire to my garage with my saw and hammer and build hobby movies,” he told Empire. “I’ve always wanted to make movies that were more experimental in nature, and not have to worry about them showing in movie theatres.”

Of course, his ‘garage’ is a high tech mini movie studio. And his saw and hammer are actually super powered computers, but hey – he’s trying to appeal to the little folks here.

I suspect Lucas will make sci-fi special effects stuff because that’s largely been his thing. I also expect his experimental films to be like the fourth Indiana Jones films in their thinking. I mean, Indiana Jones and aliens is pretty experimental. Hm, but so is CG-ing in Hayden Christiansen into the original trilogy.

He’ll be doing it all on a full-time basis though. And yes, he’ll still collect paychecks from LucasFilm. [Empire via The Playlist]
