Entourage Creator Doug Ellin To Write And Direct BAD SANTA 2

Doug Ellin hit it big when he teamed up with Mark Wahlberg for HBO mega hit Entourage. It was a show about celebrating excess and eventually became sort of this frat boy dramedy thing that was fun to watch. Bad Santa, on the other hand, was a dark comedy about the worst part of Christmas – rampant consumerism.

So I’m not sure how this came to be, but Deadline is reporting that Ellin has signed on to write and direct Bad Santa 2. I’m not a fan of this just because the stylez of the two seem immensely far apart. Firstly, do we need a Bad Santa 2? Secondly, do we need one from the guy who made Entourage?

I don’t want to hate on Entourage, by the way. I loved that show to death, but Ellin’s skills – at first glance – don’t seem to line up with what Bad Santa wants to be. Maybe he’ll surprise me and actually pull this off, but I’m not holding my breath.

Star Billy Bob Thornton will return, but Deadline says that he wants to film in the fall after he finishes shooting London Fields, so we can probably expect this film near the end of 2014, if not sooner.

On top of all this the original Bad Santa, directed by Terry Zwigoff and scripted by John Requa and Glenn Ficarra, is one of the great dark comedies of the past decade. So this film has a high bar to match. I’m really not sure it can, but I’m open to being wrong. [Deadline]
