The ever-questionable trend of turning animated fairy tales into live-action feature films is continuing. Variety is reporting that Emma Watson is in talks to wear the glass slippers of Cinderella in Disney’s live-action Cinderella movie.
Now, this isn’t the only fairy tale movie Watson has been linked with. Guillermo del Toro wants Watson to star as the beauty in his eventual Beauty and the Beast film. Of course, like most del Toro films, that may or may not happen.
Cinderella. This movie has long been in development. One Hour Photo director Mark Romanek was originally attached to the product and was looking at young actresses like Imogen Poots for the role, but he dropped out due to creative differences with the studio.
So now they’ve moved on to Thor and jack Ryan (comes out later this year) director Kenneth Branagh to take over. And he’s turning to Watson.
If she takes the role, she’d be joining a cast that includes Cate Blanchett as the evil stepmother. Could you imagine that? Watson as Cinderella and Blanchett as the evil stepmother!? That would be fantastic! And it would give me hope after Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman crushed my spirit for live-action fairy tales.
Hopefully Disney knows what its doing. They’ve also got Maleficent, a prequel to Sleeping Beauty about how Maleficent got so evil (starring Angelina Jolie as Maleficent). And, of course, Oz the Great and Powerful releases on March 8. And apparently they’re working on a sequel to Alice in Wonderland (hopefully without Tim Burton this time). [Variety]
