Eddie Murphy will host the Oscars, and this is why that’s great

It’s confirmed! Eddie Murphy has agreed to host the 84th Annual Academy Awards! Huzzah! Good job on the hire, Brett Ratner.

Now, some will be worried about Murphy because his career has been a bunch of flops recently, and an amazing turn in Dreamgirls.

But you don’t remember, do you?

Classic Eddie Murphy. SNL Murphy! See, he’s comfortable in front of crowds, and he can handle live events. After all, he is a comic.

He can also do jokes about movies.

And he was awesome in Beverly Hills Cop.

See, it’s not about whether he hasn’t been funny in 5 years, because he has. Remember Shrek?

The thing about Murphy is he hasn’t had good material to work with. He’s still funny, he’s just cashing in while he can. He’s the best choice available. The Oscars air on Feb 26. Good luck, Eddie. [THR]

This presumes that Oscar hosts have to be funny. They don’t. You’ll recall that Billy Chrystal hosted them 8 times.
