Don Cheadle’s Colonel James Rhodes has been second fiddle to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark in both Iron Man 2 and Iron Man Three. It was in Three, however, that he really got a lot of time to develop. He got some great lines and moments and started to feel like he could join up with Tony in an Avengers movie.
And hey, would you look at that: Bleeding Cool is reporting that Cheadle will in fact be in Avengers: Age of Ultron. How big of a role will he have? That’s uncertain, but I’m glad he’s in it either way. At the end of Three, we saw Stark give up the Iron Man suit. Could Rhodey sub in for a little bit? Or could Rhodey just join The Avengers outright and help take on Ultron?
There’s a feeling that Age of Ultron is going to be Stark-specific. That Jarvis, or a new AI developed by Stark (perhaps one developed for Rhodes?) becomes corrupted and turns into Ultron. That would be easy to believe and feels like a logical extension of Stark’s experimentations with AI suits in Three. So, of course, it makes sense that Rhodes would feature in a movie that features this kind of story.
Also: this brings some much-needed diversity to The Avengers. That’s always a good thing.
Production is gearing up soon, so there’ll probably be a lot of secrets spilled and all that. Some of it will be cool, some of it will ruin the movie. We’ll have to wait and see what happens. [Bleeding Cool]
