The first trailer for Captain Phillips sold the true aspect story of the film and focused on Tom Hanks trying to keep Somali pirates off of his boat. It looked fine and intriguing, but it was a tease.
This second trailer dives deeply into the plot, maybe too deeply. We see more of what I assume to be the bulk of the film: people rallying to try to save Tom Hanks and Hanks and the Somali pirate talking about how he has to do what he has to do because Somalia isn’t America.
Yeah, they’re going to try to make the pirate sympathetic before Hanks eventually kills him or something to escape and be happy back in America. Or something. I don’t know the story to the film and I don’t know if it’s a spoiler, but it’s hard to see any other outcome after this trailer.
And I think I’m OK with that. As long as they effectively thrill me and make me care and fear for Hanks’ life then I’m fine. My excitement for this movie, which isn’t amazingly high, still resides in the fact that it looks like it could be a return to form for director Paul Greengrass. And maybe Hanks’ Boston accent.
Captain Phillips arrives in theaters on October 11.
