Benicio Del Toro, Glenn Close Join GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Deadline is reporting that Benicio Del Toro has joined the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy. They’re pegging it as a “lead” role that includes options to feature in multiple upcoming Marvel films. What in the world could it be?

There are a couple options. First there’s Rocket Raccoon, who’s been pegged by Marvel to become a fan favorite after James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. If the Guardians feature in future Marvel movies, like The Avengers 2, that would certainly make sense from the deal perspective in addition to the “lead” tagging.

The other option, which happens to be far more interesting, is that Del Toro is Thanos. This would certainly make sense in the context of the Guardians as they take on Thanos in the comics. Plus, that would make sense in the context of multiple films as he’s likely to be the main villain in The Avengers 2 (as far as The Avengers mid-credit scene is concerned). Playing a bad guy would certainly fit Del Toro’s abilities. He even kind of looks like Thanos in a weird way, or he at least looks more like him than he does Rocket Raccoon.

Glenn Close is also joining the cast, playing the leader of the interplanetary cop organization known as the Nova Corps. That brings the Guardians of the Galaxy cast into the “excellent” category in my eyes, as it already includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, The Walking Dead’s Michael Rooker, Lee Pace and John C. Reilly.

Guardians of the Galaxy is quickly turning into the most awesomely bizarre Marvel movie yet. It hits theaters on August 1, 2014. [Deadline]
