Ben Affleck and Matt Damon will reunite for Whitey Bulger mobster movie

Sure, BFFs Ben Affleck and Matt Damon have been in movies together since Good Will Hunting, but have they made a movie together since then? No. So what better a project than the story of New England’s most notorious mobster: Whitey Bulger.

Affleck is going to direct, co-produce and act while Damon will co-produce and star as Bulger. As for who’s writing it, who better than Boardwalk Empire creator Terrence Winter? No one. Ben’s little bro Casey Affleck will play a role too.

Affleck says about the movie:

“Matt and I have been looking for something to do together for some time. We’ve heard about Whitey Bulger since we were kids, and we are excited by the prospect of putting it on screen.”

This is a somewhat ironic role for Damon. In Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, Damon played a crooked cop. That film was partly inspired by Bulger’s life. Now he’s playing Bulger, who fled in 1994 and has been a fugitive ever since. That’s 16 years! For 12 of the years he was on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted List. He was arrested in June in Santa Monica.

The story of the film will cover Bulger’s youth to him being incarcerated at Alcatraz, which includes his rise to a mob boss while serving as an FBI informant.

Affleck has been quite busy as a filmmaker. He’s current making Argo and Warner Bros. wants him to take on Stephen King’s The Stand, but with Bulger and best friend Damon waiting for him he may skip that. [Deadline]
