At this point any time that Meryl Streep takes a roll there’s going to be Oscar buzz around it. That’s just how talented she is. And sometimes she even overshadows how bad the movie is (The Iron Lady). This looks like the same thing.
It’s based on a play by Tracy Letts, who also wrote the screenplay. It’s about the “strong-willed woman of the Weston family.” They don’t really like each other so they stay away from one another until some family crises forces them to be together. It’s also directed by John Wells, who’s worked on shows like ER, The West Wing and Shameless – so I guess this is pure character-driven drama.
However, the real draw here is the cast. The aforementioned Street, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Abigail Breslin, Sam Shepard, Chris Cooper, Juliette Lewis and most importantly: Benedict Cumberbatch. Oddly, Cumberbatch doesn’t get his name called out in the trailer. That’s weird because a whole bunch of people are about to see him in Star Trek Into Darkness, which is going to make close to a $100 million. Why they wouldn’t use that a selling point doesn’t make sense to me.
Anyway, all these people are likely out for some Oscar recognition. This one is likely to be something Oscar voters lap up and nominate in droves, especially with George Clooney, Grant Heslov and The Weinstein Company involved. You can see the family drama on November 8, 2013 – prime Oscar territory.
